When it comes to fitness and longevity, most people focus on movement, strength, and conditioning—but often overlook the foundation that makes it all possible: posture. At FitnessFest, Patrick Mummy, CEO of Symmetry for Health and creator of Alignment, shared why addressing posture is the key to not only preventing pain but also reclaiming mobility and vitality at any age.
Patrick’s journey—from an injured college athlete to developing a patented postural assessment and corrective exercise system—is proof that pain doesn’t have to be permanent. His philosophy is simple but powerful: measure, educate, correct, and empower.
Here are three of Patrick’s top tips for anyone looking to fix their posture and eliminate pain:
1. Start with Measurement
“You can’t educate and correct if you don’t measure first,” Patrick explained. Too often, trainers and even medical professionals jump straight into treatment without understanding the root cause. His system uses 20 structural landmarks to score posture from 0 (perfect alignment) to 81 (severely misaligned). That score becomes the roadmap to real, lasting change.
2. Don’t Rely on Quick Fixes
Patrick emphasizes that most Western medicine only provides temporary relief: “When you go get treated for your pain, you’re not looking at the rest of your body that typically caused that pain over time.” That’s why massage, chiropractic adjustments, or painkillers might make you feel better in the moment—but without correcting posture, the pain always comes back.
3. Empower People to Take Control
As Patrick puts it: “We’re so conditioned as patients to rely on somebody else to fix us that we don’t even understand this philosophy of—you want me to participate?” His approach shifts the responsibility back to the individual, teaching clients how to correct their own posture with targeted exercises so that they can stay pain-free long term.
The takeaway? Fixing your posture isn’t about a single adjustment, a piece of equipment, or a one-time session—it’s about awareness, consistent corrective work, and empowerment.
