Tricia Murphy Madden has been shaping the fitness industry for more than 30 years. As a master educator, program creator, and industry leader, she’s seen the difference between good instructors and great ones. Now as the co-owner of Fit Pro Programming, she’s dedicated to helping other instructors grow. In a recent conversation, she shared five key tips for fitness professionals who want to stand out and grow.
1. Never Stop Learning
“The skill set development…is probably one of the most important elements. You’re always looking to develop your skills as a trainer, as an instructor. If you’re not going to continue in education and you’re not studying new trends, new research, new approaches to fitness, you’re really missing the boat.”
Ongoing education is what keeps you relevant, effective, and in demand.
2. Invest in Yourself and Your Team
“I sold my couch and a side table just to afford taking my team to IDEA World…there was just no other choice. You had to get that inspiration in order to come back and be sort of the mecca of group fitness here in Seattle.”
Growth often requires sacrifice. Tricia reminds us that investing in inspiration and education always pays off in the long run.
3. Focus on Inspiration, Not Intensity
“I don’t want to be the hardest instructor. I want to be the most inspiring instructor who gives people what their bodies and minds need.”
Clients don’t stay because you crushed them—they stay because you uplifted them.
4. Understand the “Why” Behind Your Workouts
“One of the things we’ve been challenged with…is preformatted group fitness classes where you’re just regurgitating. It’s so important that you understand why you’re teaching it the way you are. You should always keep your eyes open.”
Tricia emphasizes questioning the purpose of every sequence, cue, and workout. True professionals know why they’re teaching—not just what.
5. Create True Community
“There’s so much content online. You can get a thousand workouts for free, but you can’t get that in-person touch…So I’m really encouraging instructors to ask their students to engage with each other, play games, and create true community.”
In a world full of digital workouts, connection is what makes people come back to your classes again and again.
Whether you’re a new instructor or a seasoned veteran, these five lessons are clear: keep learning, invest in your growth, inspire instead of intimidate, know your “why,” and create community.
