Pain Free Movement Changes Everything

At FitnessFest, we’re passionate about bringing you experts who push the industry forward. Recently, we sat down with Jeff Melis, co-founder of the Exercise Therapy Association, to talk about the future of training, longevity, and helping clients move pain-free. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation that can shift the way you work with clients.

1. Recognize the Gap in Traditional Training

Most personal training certifications focus heavily on strength, fat loss, and performance programming. While these skills are essential, many clients come in with nagging aches, old injuries, or movement issues that prevent them from thriving. That’s where a gap appears—clients need more than just reps and sets. As Jeff shared, “We believed that there was a little bit of a gap between what we were taught as personal trainers and what clients needed from us.”

By learning the principles of exercise therapy, trainers can address the limitations that often get overlooked, empowering clients to move more freely and enjoy their workouts for the long haul.

2. Focus on Function First

Helping clients look good will always be a priority, but looks don’t matter much if movement feels restricted or painful. Instead of chasing only aesthetic outcomes, trainers can add real value by building function, mobility, and confidence into every session. According to Jeff, “Our big focus is pain-free and function… Everybody wants to look great, but the number one thing that everybody’s training for is just to live their life.”

When you prioritize functional training, you’re not just sculpting bodies—you’re helping people pick up their kids, enjoy their hobbies, travel without fear of injury, and age gracefully. It’s a shift that redefines success in fitness.

3. Find the Root Cause

Pain and discomfort aren’t always located where they show up. A client might complain about their shoulder, but the real issue could stem from tight hips, a weak core, or poor posture. By looking at the body as an integrated system, trainers can uncover hidden connections that lead to lasting results. Jeff explained, “A shoulder pain isn’t always a shoulder pain… sometimes it’s the neck, the hips, or even the feet because the whole body is connected.”

This holistic approach helps trainers move beyond surface-level fixes and create targeted exercise solutions that restore balance and prevent future setbacks.

These are just a few highlights from a powerful discussion about the future of fitness and how exercise therapy is changing lives.
